Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Many people look forward to today for the day off of work. I know that when I was in school and when I was in the "working world," I loved having the day off. But, rarely did I ever think much about WHY I had the day off.

Although Ella is in public school and learned a bit about Martin Luther King, Jr. last week, I really wanted to make sure that we talked about him today. This morning, I realized that we don't have any books about MLK and thought that it might be a nice day to pick one up.

With the promise of sharing a smoothie and a new book, Lucie and Ella were ecstatic to head over to the local coffeeshop / bookstore. Since we own several books in the Picture Book Biographies series by David Adler (Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin), I was hoping that I might find A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. today. Unfortunately, they didn't have any in stock, but we were able to pick up a copy of Free At Last: The Story of Martin Luther King, Jr (DK Readers). Although the content was definitely over Lucie's head, Ella listened and asked questions throughout the book. As with most DK books, it had a nice combination of illustrations and photographs and plenty of information. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon with my girls and remember a great man who made such a difference in our country's history.
